AN UNUSUAL AUTUMN |
Our school can be a place of respite and comfort for the children and for us, as well. The sense of community at AMCS is strong.
This may be a good time to review the Teaching With Love and Logic approach to acknowledging feelings when a student (or staff member) is worried, angry or sad.
No real progress can be made toward solving a problem or even comforting someone, until they feel understood. So how to go about this important beginning?
When we see that someone is upset a good start might be:
"You seem to be a bit upset today." or "Wow. I don't see your usual smile this morning."
That may get many responses. "I am upset." or "No, I'm O.K.. However the person replies we can let them know we care and will listen if and when they want to talk. Asking more questions can be construed as prying or they may just not be able to talk at that time. A smile and a pat on the shoulder can go a long way to keeping the communication path open.
With our students, getting them involved in work can be very helpful. Perhaps a new lesson, a project of some sort, a new book to enjoy or a story telling session would be a respite from worry. Art can be very therapeutic: paint a picture, sew, or draw. Gardening can restore the soul for those who enjoy being outside. These activities are helpful for students and staff. Try writing a story for your students and illustrate it! (Mine would be illustrated with stick figures). Sing a new song, listen to new music, learn a new tune on the bells! Write and perform a play. The opportunities for self expression are limitless.
Moving forward with the joys of life reminds us of the beauty in our lives and diminishes the gap between all of us in times of worry and strife.
So go into this autumn season with the knowledge that life goes on, the cycle of renewal will happen and we are all together here at our school.
Peace to all.
